Social Commitment of the Ayurveda Shunyata Villa

Social commitment, responsibility and projects are laid down in the Memorandum since the founding of our company (Shunyata Ayurveda (PVT) Ltd.) in 2003 and therefore an essential part of our vision. Part of the profits of the Ayurveda Shunyata Villa flows in social work in the region. After our tsunami projects had been completed, we have invested our social commitment in longer-term measures such as training support, special education and other assistance for disadvantaged children.

The new projects resulted simply from emerging needs of our village schools and local temples.

We funded a new library for the village school because the old one was bursting at the seams and no books were available for the secondary school. With this school, we are still in contact and could help with other requests, such as financing of musical instruments, textbooks, and other construction projects.

The entire dilapidated classroom building of the local temple was extensively refurbished and, as well as the school library, equipped with new furniture. For the temple school, we were able to finance the new playground in recent years and have participated in the maintenance costs.

Our most current project is the construction of a small community center, which also houses a Montessori nursery school. The local Social Committee approached us in this respect. The construction works themselves were self-financed as far as possible. We could provide most of the financial resources. In this project, we now take care of the monthly salary of the teacher and her assistant, as well as for the teaching materials. We are also responsible for the ongoing maintenance costs.

But we are partners not only for those major projects. We help locals, whenever we can, with their requests for assistance: for example, medical costs like for an operation, a hearing aid or for the purchase of expensive drugs that are not covered by the state health care.

Even before the foundation of Ayurveda Shunyata Villa, it was clear to us that we would not take advantage of the situation of the underprivileged people in Sri Lanka, which – sadly enough – happens in many hotels in the country.

  • Thus we pay fair wages (our employees earn more than double than in other Ayurveda hotels).
  • All our local staff are permanently employed and receive comprehensive social benefits (we do not have day laborers or seasonal workers).
  • All employees have a 5-day week, and get compensation for each hour of overtime.
  • The staff receives 10% of the actual total sales.
  • All departments are staffed generously to prevent bottlenecks and stress for our employees.
  • We also feel responsibility for our employees and their families outside the life at the Ayurveda Shunyata Villa, and support them in case of emergency, be it with a costly medical treatment for family members or repairs to their homes.
